A love of literature and language leads to dreams of practicing family law
Monet Sterling
School of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Emergency Assistance Scholarship
Class of 2020: English and Political Science
How did you decide on your major?
I always loved English all throughout grade school. I enjoy literature and the art of language. I plan on going to law school after I graduate so, in preparation, I believed that becoming an English major would be the best route to take. In addition, I transferred into Rutgers (Fall 2018) with A.A in English. It made sense for me to stick with the same major.
What is it about your chosen field that appeals to you?
I enjoy the readings, the exposure to different genres of literature, as well as the open discussions that follow in class.
What are your plans following graduation?
Law school and/or a dual master of public affairs and politics/juris doctor (M.P.A.P./J.D.) program.
What are your dreams and aspirations?
I want to practice and specialize in family law.
What challenges or barriers did you feel were between you and your goals?
Family dilemmas/responsibilities, finances, housing.
How did this scholarship transform your educational experience?
This scholarship gave me the opportunity to financially support my academic goals and dreams.
What did this scholarship make possible?
This scholarship made it possible and less stressful for me to pay for my tuition.
What was it like the moment you found out you had the scholarship?
The moment I was awarded the scholarship, I was ecstatic to know there was a scholarship that existed for me. I immediately wanted to thank the donor. I was and still am forever grateful for my scholarship!
What did that mean to you?
It meant a lot to me. It made me feel valued as a student.
What does that allow you to do that you wouldn’t have been able to do?
The scholarship allows me to fund my education; in other words, I wouldn’t be able to afford.
What would you like to say to the donor?
Thank you so much for investing the financial support I so greatly need. I truly appreciate you!
What has Rutgers made possible for you?
Rutgers has given me the opportunity to grow and access to tools I need to expand into the person I was meant to be.
What is your favorite thing about Rutgers?
I enjoy the diversity and the plethora of academic resources that are available here.
