Jerome and Lorraine Aresty Scholarship

Class of 2021: Major Computer Science

How did you decide on your major?

I decided to major in computer science because I am interested in things that have to do with programming, technology, and coding.

What is it about your chosen field (and the department) that appeals to you?

The intensive preparation the Rutgers computer science departments offer is one of a kind. The Rutgers computer science department ensures that students gain the necessary skills for computer science jobs.

What are your plans following graduation?

Following graduation, I intend on working a full-time job as a software engineer. Hopefully, if I get a job that will pay for my master’s program, I intend on getting my master’s degree after a year or two of gaining more experience in the software engineering industries.

What are your dreams and aspirations?

As an aspiring software engineer, I eventually plan on establishing industries in computer programming and also free technical training institutions in impoverished areas such as my home country Ghana and other African countries.

What challenges or barriers did you feel were between you and your goals?

Given that I am situated in a single-parent household, it made it difficult for me to afford some of my college expenses. Additionally, since I went to a high school in an impoverished area, I did not get prepared enough to tackle the rigorous academic system at Rutgers

How did this scholarship transform your educational experience?

This scholarship made it possible for me to fully pay my tuition every semester I have been at Rutgers. This profound support from the SAS scholarship office has helped me focus more on my school work, which has led me to successfully excel in my courses.

What was it like the moment you found out you had the scholarship?

I was extremely excited the moment I found out I had gotten the scholarship. The joy that filled my heart when I found out I had gotten the scholarship was unfathomable.

What did that mean to you?

This scholarship means a lot to me, and I promise to work hard to make this great investment in me profitable to my community, family, and nation.

What does that allow you to do that you wouldn’t have been able to do?

This scholarship has allowed me to live comfortably on campus without worrying about working multiple jobs to survive college.

What would you like to say to the donor?

Words cannot explain my gratitude towards the kindness of the donors for granting me this great opportunity.

What has Rutgers made possible for you?

Attending Rutgers is the best decision I have ever made in my life. Rutgers has provided me with many opportunities like studying abroad, partaking in diverse extracurricular, opportunities, and most importantly getting a prestigious world-class education.

What is your favorite thing about Rutgers?

I love how Rutgers provides a lot of opportunities to its students to ensure the success of each student in their pursuit of education, and their life goals.
