The Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences has created an array of programs leading to a Master of Arts (MA), Master of Sciences (MS), and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) that address the complexity of the world we live in. Master’s students return to Rutgers through the School of Graduate Studies to enroll in these programs for additional education and training in fields that will have a lasting impact on the world.

Art History MA
Strategically located between New York City and Philadelphia, the Art History program offers master’s students an exceptional combination of an outstanding faculty, rigorous, imaginative scholarship, a spectrum of cross-disciplinary programs, and professional opportunities.
Chinese MAT
This MAT program is primarily designed for Chinese language teachers at American secondary schools who wish to further develop their professional knowledge and skills and for those interested in pursuing a Chinese language and culture teaching career at K-12 schools.
Computer Science MS
This program equips master's students with the knowledge and skills to teach, develop, and design computer systems, hold administrative positions requiring planning and evaluations of computer-based systems, and further study and research at the doctoral level.
Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies MA
This two-year master’s program emphasizes the development of a broad understanding of heritage contexts and policies with a focus on practical professional experiences, including internship or fieldwork experience with a cultural institution, firm, or governmental agency.
Data Science - MSDS Statistics Track
This program focuses on analytical tools with solid foundations in algorithms, optimization, systems building, visualization, and statistical theory and methodology, which have become indispensable to industry and society in general.
Data Science - MSDS Computer Science Track
This master’s program focuses on the latest systems, tools, and algorithms to store, retrieve, process, analyze, visualize, and synthesize large data sets with a central goal of creating and integrating computerized tools that enhance decision making to improve quality of life.
East Asian Language and Cultures MA
This master’s program offers exceptional academic opportunities for advanced study of China, Japan, and/or Korea, and prepares students for careers in government, private companies, and non-profit organizations for an increasingly interconnected world.
Financial Statistics & Risk Management MS
The FSRM master’s program gives students core training in probability theory, statistical inference and advanced statistical and computational methods tailored to financial data analysis and modeling and risk management.
French MA
This program offers students the opportunity to work closely with faculty specializing in all periods and areas of French and to participate in the Department’s year-long exchange programs with the prestigious École Normale Supérieure in Paris (rue d’Ulm).
French MAT
This MAT program is designed for individuals already teaching French and gives students the option of participating in the “Teachers at the Louvre” program where they can earn credit while exploring the riches of the Louvre and other Parisian museums.
Genetic Counseling MS
This master’s program is for students wishing to pursue a career in the growing and exciting field of genetic counseling. Training involves rigorous coursework, a variety of clinical rotations offered throughout the state, and a research project.
Geological Sciences MS
This master’s program is designed to provide a challenging yet fostering educational atmosphere that encourages independent and critical thinking, the development of communicative and teaching skills, and the performance of creative and original research.
German MAT
The MAT program in German is designed for those already teaching German or working toward certification. Undergraduates majoring in German (or Education) and intending to teach German may wish to augment the BA with this degree.
Global and Comparative History MA
This master’s degree draws on the strength of a faculty with nearly twenty members working on various aspects of globhistory-making major scholarly contributions to the field including specializations in Indian, African, Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern history.
Global Sports Business MS
This program is a broad-based, inherently global, industry-specific program that reflects Rutgers’ traditional strengths in finance, marketing, management, and law, located in the New York/ Philadelphia/Washington northeast corridor, the center of the sports industry.
Italian MAT
The Italian MAT program is intended primarily for those who are teaching, or intend to teach, at the secondary school level. The program emphasizes language, literature, and culture.
Jewish Studies MA
The master’s program in Jewish Studies is designed for those seeking to advance their knowledge at the graduate level to prepare for doctoral-level work in Jewish Studies or to further their careers in fields such as education, communal service, library science, and public affairs.
Mathematical Finance MS
This program integrates theoretical foundations with practical applications to quantitative finance and prepares graduates for careers in investment banks, hedge funds, asset management companies, with roles in financial modeling and software development, and portfolio management.
Microbiology and Molecular Genetics MS
This master’s program is part of a large, diverse, and highly interactive community of biological scientists that form the Graduate Program at Rutgers University and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School with courses is largely governed by individual student interests and needs.
Religious Studies MA
This program focuses on a range of study from religion in its most sublime to horrifying aspects. Students assess the historical genealogies of religion and their contemporary implications in the era of religious modernity and secularism.
Spanish MA
This program offers an innovative curriculum that embraces all phases of Hispanic literature, culture and civilization as well as courses in Spanish linguistics, literary theory, Luso-Brazilian literature and culture, translation, interpretation, and teaching and research methodology.
Spanish MAT
This program can be completed totally online or in a combination of course platforms: online, hybrid, on-campus, and/or summer study abroad in Spain and Peru, allowing flexibility in course planning, life demands, personal preference, and program completion timeframe.
Spanish Translation and Interpreting MA
The Translation and Interpreting program at Rutgers is one of the first of its kind in the US. During the last 20 years, graduates have achieved wide recognition holding leading positions in the field such as federal and state court interpreting, in-house translation in Fortune 500 companies, translation management for US translation agencies, and medical interpreting.
Statistics and Biostatistics MS
This program offers concentrations in Quality and Productivity Management, Biostatistics, and Data Mining. Graduates of the program have gone on to have successful careers in pharmaceutical research and development, educational testing, financial services, and more.
United Nations and Global Policy Studies MA
With classes in Manhattan and New Brunswick, this unique liberal arts degree provides students with an opportunity to learn about the United Nations and global public policy within an interdisciplinary perspective.
Women's and Gender Studies MA
This master’s program is a liberal arts degree that provides students with an opportunity to pursue advanced interdisciplinary work in Women's and Gender Studies, enabling them to become active practitioners in this rapidly expanding field of study.
