The Challenge

The prestigious Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Rutgers’ School of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers University–New Brunswick a challenge grant to fund graduate programs in the humanities and to build an endowment that will support those programs in perpetuity.

Recognizing the prestige of Rutgers’ humanities departments, the Mellon Foundation grant supports graduate education in the following departments: art history, comparative literature, English, history, linguistics, philosophy, classics, and foreign language departments. This grant enables Arts and Sciences to continue initiatives that support doctoral candidates’ scholarly activities, including research funding and dissertation completion fellowships.

Doctoral candidates are an important link between undergraduate students, whom they often teach, and faculty members, who rely on them to help conduct research. They are indispensable contributors to the growth and success of great research universities like Rutgers. The challenge is to build, with Mellon Foundation support, an endowment that will create a lasting legacy and ensure that Rutgers continues to attract the most talented students to its humanities programs. The generous grant from the Mellon Foundation includes $1.5 million in spendable funds for graduate student support, and $2 million for an endowment if SAS raises $3 million by  December 31, 2019. We’re already $2.1 million toward our $3 million goal!

Rutgers humanities programs are among the best in the country. Achieving this fundraising goal—resulting in a $5 million endowment—will help make them even better.

The Benefits

Although Rutgers humanities departments are already among the best in the country, the Mellon grant and matching funds Arts and Sciences raises will ensure excellence in the humanities for many years to come.

The entire university will benefit from:

  •  The ability to better compete with peer institutions for the most outstanding doctoral candidates.
  •  More humanities graduate students receiving aid to conduct research and finish their dissertations.
  • Excellent graduate students who support faculty members’ research and teaching, and provide valuable instruction to and interaction with undergraduates.
  • Added luster to Rutgers’ reputation in the humanities as these graduate students are hired by top universities around the world.

Consider a gift to support the Mellon Challenge and help the School of Arts and Sciences  reach its goal of $3 million in endowed funds.

Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences has a long tradition of excellence in the humanities. Our partnership with the Mellon Foundation has played a crucial role and your added support will secure our future success.
