Personal Statement
After graduating from high school, a number of my friends went to Rutgers. Since I had to pay for college myself, I went to work.
When I visited my friends at Rutgers, people would always ask me if I was a student. I’d tell them I was there to support my friends. But I always added this vow: One day I would have a Rutgers degree.
Fast forward a few years later. I’m married with a family. When my youngest child was born I knew it was time to pursue my education. I wanted my husband and my two daughters to be as proud of me as I was of them. I started my college education at the age of 32. I worked, took care of my family, and attended evening classes.
In spring of 2013, I transferred to Rutgers from a county college. Four years later and I'm proud to say “I did it!”
For me, it started with a promise that I never forgot. I will now have a diploma from Rutgers. Even if it took me 25 years after high school graduation, I am proud of my accomplishment and I would also like to congratulate all the graduates. You did it!
