Abstract:
From new cars to the next generation fitness tracker, or perhaps the latest track from our favorite artist, many products today are rooted in software. The software enables existing product features, as well as fixing defects, updating or adding features, or changing others. The problem? When that software stops working - intentionally or not - the product stops working.

During this session, Shawn Shell will discuss the challenges for consumers when buying these software-driven products. Are there ethical concerns? Are there consumer rights issues? Finally, does our basic economic model need to change to recognize a potentially temporal product “ownership” experience?
