University Research Offices
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), provides pre-award advice to faculty and staff regarding University and sponsor requirements and budgets. As the official signatory for the University, the Contract/Grant Specialists review all proposals to external funders for compliance with all applicable regulations (federal, state, sponsor or University) and to ensure that the proposal budgets are appropriate for the project. ORSP also houses the faculty committees governing the protection of human subjects (the IRB), and the use and care of animals. ORSP also provides guidance to researchers navigating the various departments that support research at Rutgers.
The Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED), oversees the research enterprise of the University as a whole, including ORSP, the Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC-which develops intellectual property into useful products and services), the Office of Research Alliances, which builds complex collaborative connections with industry partners, and Corporate Contracts, which is responsible for reviewing, drafting, negotiating and signing industry sponsored agreements. ORED also manages several internal funding programs, including the Research Council Grant program, and several programs in the biomedical and physical sciences.
The Institutional Review Board (IRB) protects the rights and welfare of human research subjects while facilitating ethical research. Review by the IRB is required for any research involving human subjects whether funded or unfunded and regardless of the funding source.
