Dean of Humanties
James “Jimmy” Swenson, Associate Professor of French, is a scholar of eighteenth-century literature and intellectual history, and twentieth-century criticism and theory. At Rutgers since 1993, he has served as Undergraduate and Graduate Director and as Chair from 2005–2010. As Area Dean, he works with department chairs in the Humanities and the Executive Dean to assist with hiring and promotion of faculty, maintain oversight of undergraduate and graduate instruction within departments and programs, and work with faculty and chairs to promote professional and departmental development. He also participates in the strategic planning and decision-making process of the School of Arts and Sciences providing recommendations and assistance to the Executive Dean.
