SAS Welcomes New Faculty

Alison R. Bernstein joins the Department of History as a Professor and is the new Director of the Institute for Women’s Leadership. Her research interests include: diversity in higher education; gender and sexuality; and American Indian history.

Yarimar Bonilla joins the Departments of Latino and Hispanic Caribbean Studies and Anthropology as an Assistant Professor and received her Ph.D. at The University of Chicago.

Sharon Bzostek joins the Department of Sociology as an Assistant Professor and received her Ph.D. from Princeton University.

John Paul Chou joins the Department of Physics and Astronomy as an Assistant Professor and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Rachel Devlin joins the Department of History as an Associate Professor with research interest in 20th century American history; women’s history; race, ethnicity, and gender. She received her Ph.D. from Yale University

Leah DeVun joins the Department of History as an Associate Professor and studies the History of Medieval Europe and gender and sexuality. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University

Jonathan Marc Gribetz joins the Departments of Jewish Studies and History as an Assistant Professor and studies the history of the Middle East and relations between Jews and Arabs in Ottoman-era Palestine. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University.

Jennifer Hunt joins the Department of Economics as a Professor and studies 20th century American and studies Labor economics; employment and unemployment policy; and immigration. She received her Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Olabode Ibironke joins the Department of English as an Assistant Professor and received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He studies African and African Diaspora literature in English; Yoruba literature; post-colonial theory; and the history of the book and contemporary publishing.

Andrew Kern joins the Department of Genetics as an Assistant Professor and studies computational evolutionary genomics. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis.

Jinah Kim joins the Department of Art History as an Assistant Professor and studies South Asian and Buddhist art in India. She received her Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley.

Robert E. Kopp joins the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the Rutgers Energy Institute as an Assistant Professor and studies Integrating Earth/energy system perspectives for the development of energy and climate policy; human alterations of Earth system processes; and human civilization as a geological force. He received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology.

Swastik Kopparty joins the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science as an Assistant Professor and studies omputational complexity. He received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Kelvin Y. Kwan joins the Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience as an Assistant Professor and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. His research interests include induced pluripotent stem cells and the development of the hair cells of the inner ear and their utility in restoring function after damage.

Tania del Mar López-Marrero joins the Departments of Geography and Latino and Hispanic Caribbean Studies as an Assistant Professor and received her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.

Mukti Lakhi Mangharam joins the Department of English as an Assistant Professor and studies South African and South Asian literature in English and women’s and gender studies. SHe received her Ph.D. from Cornell University.

Sarah Elliott Novacic joins the Department of English as an Assistant Professor and studies Medieval English literature. She received her Ph.D. from Yale University.

Paul Poast joins the Department of Political Science as an Assistant Professor and received his Ph.D. the University of Michigan.  His research interests include international relations; political methodology; and the intersection of international security and international political economy.

Louis Prisock joins the Departments of Africana Studies and American Studies as an Assistant Professor and received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Sevil Salur joins the Department of Physics and Astronomy as an Assistant Professor and received her Ph.D. from Yale University.

Jonathan Schaffer joins the Department of Philosophy as a Professor with research interests in metaphysics, epistemology, and causation; he received his Ph.D. at Rutgers.

Susanna Schellenberg joins the Department of Philosophy as an Associate Professor with research interests in philosophy of mind, perception, and epistemology. She received her Ph.D at the University of Pittsburgh.

Johanna Schoen joins the Department of History as an Associate Professor and studies American history; the history of medicine; reproductive health; and women’s history. SHe recieved her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina.

Edward A. Selby joins the Department of Psychology as an Assistant Professor and received his Ph.D. from The Florida State University.  His research interests include suicide, self-injury, and eating disorders.

Meheli Sen joins the Department of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures as an Assistant Professor and received her Ph.D. from Emory University.  Her research interests include cinema and South Asian cultural studies.

Rachel Somerville joins the Department of Physics and Astronomy as a Professor and studies galaxy formation and evolution and large scale structure and cosmology.  Her research interests include galaxy formation and evolution and large scale structure and cosmology.

Michelle Stephens joins the Departments of English and Latino and Hispanic Caribbean Studies as an Associate Professor and studies the literature and culture of the Caribbean and the Caribbean Diaspora. She received her Ph.D. from Yale University.

Wendy Swartz joins the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures as an Associate Professor and studies Chinese literature; poetry of the six dynasties period; and comparative literature.  She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Kristen Syrett joins the Department of Linguistics as an Assistant Professor and received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Her research interests include Experimental linguistics, language acquisition, and psycholinguistics.

A. Janet Tomiyama joins the Department of Psychology as an Assistant Professor and studies health psychology. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Michael Verzi joins the Department of Genetics as an Assistant Professor and studies genome stability. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco.

Erin Vogel joins the Department of Anthropology as an Assistant Professor and received her Ph.D. from Stony Brook University.  Her research interests include primate feeding ecology and evolution of cooperation and coalition formation.

Han Xiao joins the Department of Statistics and Biostatistics as an Assistant Professor and received his Ph.D. from The University of Chicago. His research interests include algebraic statistics and random matrix theory.

Alec D. Walen joins the Program in Criminal Justice and the Department of Philosophy at SAS and the School of Law-Camden as an Associate Professor with research interests in Criminal law; constitutional law; national security law; jurisprudence; moral theory. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and his J.D. from Harvard Law School.

Mikel Zaratiegui joins the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry as an Assistant Professor and received his Ph.D. from the University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain.

Cesar Zucco joins the Department of Political Science as an Assistant Professor and studies Latin American politics. He received his Ph.D. from University of California, Los Angeles.
