Course Attendance

A full statement of University policy having to do with course attendance is in the Policies and Procedures section of the Catalog.  It reads, in full:

Students are expected to attend all scheduled course meetings, although no special provisions normally are made for reporting occasional absences from class.

It is the policy of the university to excuse without penalty students who are absent because of religious observance or participation in intercollegiate athletics, and to allow the makeup of work missed because of such absences. A student absent from an examination because of required religious observance will be given an opportunity to make up the examination without penalty.

Among the personal obligations recognized as valid by the University is participation in University-sponsored intercollegiate athletics. Instructors are expected to provide students the opportunity to make-up any and all classwork, homework, examinations or other required course activities missed as a result of participation in practices, contests, associated travel and other similar obligations due to student athletes participation in intercollegiate athletics.  Follow this link for further details, in the document "Athlete Attendance Policy."

It has also been noted that, given the ever-increasing diversity of our student body, it is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of recognized religious holidays.  As noted by the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, "Reasonable common sense, good judgment, and the pursuit of mutual goodwill should result in the positive resolution of scheduling conflicts.”
